The ‘Welcome to fabulous Las Vegas’ sign

If you fly into Vegas you will more than likely not get a chance to be greeted by the iconic ‘Welcome to the fabulous Las Vegas’ sign. The sign is located at the very south end of the strip.

The sign was designed by Betty Willis in and was first installed in 1959.

The main reason from a visit is the photo opportunity. You will find queues of people wanted to take that ideal photo under the sign at busy parts of the day and especially at night. You will normally find a non-official photographer on site ready to take a photo for a fee. Maybe worth it for the perfect shot at night, but I’ve managed to get reasonable shots just using my camera phone. A daytime shot is much easier with your camera phone.

When I first visited the sign there was just a small traffic island in the middle of the road where the sign stood and there was quite limited access. In 2007 access was improved and parking and pedestrian crossings were added to ensure anyone can get to the sign by road or on foot.

On travelling from the airport to your hotel on the strip you may be lucky enough to drive past the signs, but I do find most taxi’s take a quicker route to the strip so you will miss out.

Getting to the sign is a short drive down the south end of the strip or around a xx minute walk from the Mandalay Bay hotel. You need to bear in mind that you may have to walk quote a way to get to Mandalay Bay from your hotel before taking the additional walk from there. The other option is to use the bus service as there is a bus stop close by and especially added for a visit the sign.
