The volcano

The volcano outside The Mirage Las Vegas hotel is an iconic attraction on the Las Vegas Strip. It has stood at the front of the Mirage since the hotel opened in 1989. It was completely renovated in 2008 with a new soundtrack added from The Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart and Indian tabla star Zakir Hussain.

However, the volcano’s days are numbered. In December 2021, Hard Rock International bought the Mirage’s operations and, over the next three years, plan to rebrand it to the Hard Rock Las Vegas.

As part of the rebrand, they plan to build a guitar-shaped hotel tower which will replace the volcano. The volcano is expected to continue to operate throughout 2023 until the new tower contruction starts.

To be honest you really only need to see the volcano show once, just to say you’ve ‘done’ the attraction. It’s not worth going out of your way to make sure you get to see it, but if you are nearby close to one of it’s firing times, its worth taking a look. It’s worth noting, you also get a good view of it from across the strip, outside the Venetian.

As far as it’s removal is concerned, it will be a shame to lose such an iconic attraction, but Vegas has always been about change and renewal. Hotels come and go, and attractions open and close.

I’m glad I’ll be able to say I saw the volcano, but I am also excited to see the future of The Mirage as it transforms into the Hard Rock.

The volcano operates every evening, weather permitting, and fires on the hour at 7pm8pm9pm10pm and 11pm. Catch it while you can!
